Stress can make your period late, because when you are stressed, hormone function will be disrupted. Likewise with menstruation-triggering hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone, whose numbers become unbalanced. If you are late for your period, but don’t feel any signs of pregnancy, stress can be one of the causes.

Stress is thought to suppress the function of the hypothalamus, which is the part of the brain that controls the body’s main gland called the pituitary. These glands can stimulate the ovaries to produce the hormones estrogen and progesterone which will trigger menstruation. When stressed, the body also produces the hormone cortisol which can interfere with the function of other hormones, including the hormone that triggers menstruation.

If your body can’t tolerate stress well, it can lead to late menstruation, or even no menstruation at all for several periods or amenorrhea. This condition can continue to occur as long as the stress continues and is not resolved.
